Skateboards and Blog Posts- A first time for everything.

Earlier this year my son found a little blue skateboard at our local Goodwill. Despite our worrisome looks, my husband and I agreed that it would be a good starting point for him to learn and if anything he’d lose interest like he does with most things. Much to our surprise, he started practicing at home right away. A few weeks later he was asking us to allow him to skateboard to school. And just recently he told us he was ready to go to the skate park like “the real boys do”.

Now we didn’t get to this point without much frustration and a few “confiscations” of said little blue skateboard. Because the truth is my son has a temper – yes sweet Malcolm, can you believe it? He’s the kind of kid who wants to do the kick-flip before he even learns how to balance – I can attest to his level of patience. So he would try big moves and naturally, he would fall or in his mind fail. “I can’t do this!” he would scream in utter frustration. But before we could say anything to him he was back up and at it again. I think navigating skateboarding has helped us grow as a family. We’re all learning to have a little more patience and even my daughter has stepped out of her comfort zone and began roller skating because of Malcolm’s bravery to try new things. So overall I’d say that little blue skateboard was well worth the $7.00 price tag.
Malcolm (7) finds his balance before taking off down the ramp.

Now I find myself sitting in my office also starting something new. This blog. While there's practically no $7.00 risk to blogging, I'm still a little bit nervous to start. What will I write about? What if I fall, or dare I say it fail? A successful blog is like the kick-flip of the blogging community, it's impressive but for now, I think merely finding balance is exactly where I should be.
